Synthetic / Natural Turf Surface Proves Success
Southall proves success at Saltex
Kestrel (Contractors) Ltd teamed up with ex-Everton and Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall at Windsor Racecourse for this year’s IOG Saltex Exhibition.
A 600 sq metre inflatable ‘Stadium’ provided by the Football Foundation housed a dual surface football pitch which played host to a small scale penalty shoot out compettitin where guests were invited to test their skills against the legendary stopper.

The pitch itself consisted of a specialised 40mm thick smooth stalk meadow grass/ ryegrass natural sports turf in 1.2 metre wide strips and a 3rd Generation 60mm pile rubber crumb and sand filled synthetic sports turf.
The two different surfaces were laid specifically to allow comparisons between natural & artificial sports surfaces & illustrate significant advancements in natural & synthetic turf.
It also gave visitors an opportunity of viewing the high tensile strength of the predominantly SSMG natural turf in respect to playing immediately after being laid.
“One thing is for sure” said Neville “both natural and synthetic grass have improved significantly from my heyday. What did surprise me was how stable the natural turf felt despite only being laid the previous day”
Many of the users, Neville included, were very surprised that the artificial 3rd Generation surface, which has a sand and rubber crumb infill, provided such a true replicate of the natural sports turf provided by County Turf.
It was a good representation of Kestrel's ability to construct and lay both surfaces within the same project and offered a good chance to see the benefits of both.
