Astroturf, Astro turf, All weather surfaces

Astroturf or Astro Turf as it is commonly known was the first all weather surface of its kind, helping to revolutionise artificial sportsfields.

Since its conception astroturf has made considerable advancements in recent years, from sand dressed water based surfaces, which were typically unforgiving in terms of shock absoption and skin abrasions, to all weather surfaces commonly known as 3rd Generation astro turf, which play akin to that of natural grass.

The early versions of astro turf were actually produced to provide decoration & not specifically as an all weather, low maintenance solution for sports usage.

However it soon became clear where the value of astroturf lied.

 

Astroturf investment

As astro turf became popular and investment increased as       valuable revenue streams were being created, later versions were designed which provided a resistant turf, constructed from synthetic materials, which is not affected by adverse weather conditions and therefore it was an astroturf suitable for permanent outdoor usage.

 

As the potential benefits of having an all weather sports surface became clear, such as low maintenance costs & 24/7 playability, research was undertaken to address the obvious limitations & in recent years significant advancements have been made.

 

3rd Generation astroturf development

Instead of the water based, sand filled surfaces, synonomous with the term astroturf or astro turf, yarn and carpet manufacturers have worked in conjunction to produce a 3rd generation sports turf which is a replica of a natural grass surface.

 

Today's all weather surfaces

The 3rd generation synthetic surfaces available today are a marked improvement and are rubber crumb and sand filled. Kestrel work in conjunction with the countries most dynamic carpet manufacturers and the latest all weather sports surfaces genuinely replicate   natural grass unlike the original astroturf of yesteryear.

 

Governing body approved artificial surfaces

Dependent on individual specifications, 3rd generation synthetic surfaces come with a certificate of approval from either the FA, IRB, IHA or FIFA, which illustrates that the surface performs to that of a high quality natural turf.
