Type of installation: Outdoor concert venue
Location: Clapham Common
Kestrel were contacted via a RHS recommendation (for whom they carry out reinstatements at the Chelsea Flower Show) to an emergency at Clapham Common. A series of outdoor concerts were taking place throughout the summer of 2010 on the Common and in the process of setting up site the Great British summer intervened and turned the site into a mud bath.
Kestrel were contacted on the Wednesday before the concerts started on the Saturday and asked if they could returf almost 4000 square metres of muddy surface. The request was further complicated in that there would be a variety of contractors still working on site to work around.
After ensuring that Risk Assessments and Health & Safety concerns were addressed Kestrel stripped off the surface with the Koro Field Top Maker, cultivated and levelled the area before laying 4000m of County Turf Big Roll in 1.2 metre widths in 15 metre lengths. Each turf weighed over half a tonne which ensure that the surface was stable.
The festival passed off without further issues. Lambeth Council who own the site said were astounded at the professionalism and efficiency of the operation.
