Type of installation: 4 natural grass rugby and football pitches
Location: Orford Park, Warrington
Natural and artificial sports pitch specialists Kestrel recently completed the design and construction of a flagship sports facility at the heart of the Orford Park Community Sports Hub project.
This unique regeneration venture will use sport, leisure, health, education and lifelong learning to increase the health and well-being of the local community. The £30million Orford Park project will transform 50 acres of a former landfill site and enhance the facilities of the popular Victorian community park.
The Olympic Legacy site, which is due to officially open in May 2012, will play host to the route carrying the symbolic flaming torch as it travels by relay around the country before the start of the London 2012 Olympics on July 27.
Kestrel’sability to secure the prestigious contract was largely down to their capability to offer considerable added value to main contractor Galliford Try by providing a full design and build package for both surfaces in partnership with client architect Total Turf Solutions.
The scheme included the construction of 4 natural grass football and rugby pitches as well as a FIFA 1* compliant full size 3rd Generation artificial grass football surface, which can also be used for touch rugby.
The nature of the ground conditions and drainage characteristics of the site threw up a number of challenges and as such the design stage had to be thought about in detail by experienced specialists.
The onsite scope of works also enabled experienced sports ground contractors Kestrel to showcase their range of services across the sports turf spectrum.
Kestrel were responsible for importing inert fill as part of the initial ground remediation as well asBS3882 approved topsoil for the sports field construction, installing intensive land drainage using their laser guided trenching equipment.
The natural grass pitches also had a considerable quantity of sand ameliorated into the surface before being cultivated and seeded using an approved high wearing seed mix.
Kestrel proved their worth by also undertaking the initial earthworks, land drainage including attenuation system, stone formation placement, kerbing, macadam laying, artificial grass installation and erection of the fencing and floodlighting systems for the 3rd Generation rubber crumb artificial grass surface.
It was another successful high profile natural and artificial project for Kestrel as they continue to provide unrivalled expertise in the construction of high quality natural and artificial sports surfaces across the UK.
