Type of installation: Artificial pitch construction
Natural and artificial sports pitch specialists Kestrel recently completed the design and construction of a 6,000m2 3rd Generation artificial rugby surface at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke.
The project had generated a lot of interest and as such the client interviewed a number of potential contractors for the scheme.
However following a series of post tender interviews and site visits the client was suitably impressed by the quality of the pitch installed for Exeter Chiefs RFC back in 2006 and QMC instructed Kestrel to undertake the scheme as a result.
One of the key criteria for the College was to have a genuine dual use surface for football and rugby without compromising the performance of either. Kestrel installed a tried and tested 65mm 3G sand and rubber crumb filled artificial grass surface over the 23mm E Performance base by Brock which provides exceptional performance, comfort and durability as well as ensuring compliance with IRB Clause 22 as well as FIFA 1*, meaning the pitch is suitable for competitive football and full contact rugby training.
Kestrel’s ability to generate very tight tolerances in the final surface using their specialist laser guided machinery and years of in house expertise ensured a perfect base for the Brock shockpad and 3G surface with Steve Saywer of Brock commenting that the levels were ‘better than macadam’.
Kestrel provided on going quality and sustainability by erecting an array of quality aluminium self-weighted sports equipment and installing a very robust 3m and 6m high rigid mesh perimeter rebound fence and state of the art floodlighting system to 200 lux in line with FA guidelines.
The project was completed inside the suggested 12 week construction programme and was delivered within budget.
The College are delighted with the new facility which provides them with a top class artificial pitch for football and rugby as well as a valuable revenue stream and enhances their important links with the local sporting community.
