Type of installation: 3rd Generation artificial turf pitch
Location: RAF Odiham, Hook, Hampshire
The service men and women at RAF Odiham in Hampshire are benefiting from a state of the art 3rd Generation turf pitch after their existing weathered sand based astro turf was re-surfaced by local sports ground firm Kestrel (Contractors) Ltd.
Kestrel recently installed a 3rd Generation artificial grass football pitch for RAF Spadeadam which gave RAF Odiham all the assurances they required when opting for Kestrel.
The 13 year old sand filled hockey and football surface was showing signs of wear and suffering drainage issues so it was decided that the pitch needed to be replaced.
With a primary football and secondary hockey usage the RAF had to make a decision faced by many sports clubs as to whether it was best to replace the current sand based system with a like for like surface or to opt for a dual usage 3G system.
The fact that 3rd Generation synthetic turf, usually associated with high level football usage, has recently been endorsed by the Federation of International Hockey and given the RAF Odiham had no hesitation in opting for a 40mm pile 3G surface.
Kestrel began work by lifting up and disposing of the existing full sized sand filled artificial grass surface and underlying preformed rubber shockpad. Remediation works were carried out to the supporting macadam layer to correct some minor level undulations and rectify some minor drainage issues before the new surface could be laid.
A 15mm thick wet pour rubber shockpad was then laid using specialist equipment to achieve the required tolerances and was followed by a 40mm pile 3G artificial grass infilled with sand and rubber crumb as well as line markings to accommodate both football and hockey.
Mark Chandler who oversaw the installation on behalf of RAF Odiham said he was ‘absolutely delighted with the new surface’ which is also used by a variety of clubs in the local community.
NB: England Hockey will from 1st August 2009 permit the use of EH Category 3 surfaces for local and regional league competition (excepting regional premiership divisions– e.g. the division that directly feed the national league) however it should be noted that the playing surface is characterised by a slower surface speed and sometimes a lower surface consistency.
