Type of installation: 4th generation artificial pitch construction
Location: Wembley Technology College
In 2007, Wembley High Technology College called in synthetic turf specialists Kestrel Contractors to design and build their new 3/4 size 3rd Generation artificial grass pitch which is used for football, tag rugby and hockey.
So happy were the college with the construction they called back Kestrel to construct another recreational area in 2008.
This time, the deputy Head of the College, Matt Gilbert, explained that he required a “performance and recreation area” for the students to use during and after school hours.
Kestrel started the design and build project in July 2008 and finished in early September.
Domo’s Champion Infinity 4th Generation turf is a FIFA 2* certified long piled synthetic turf which does not require infill to give the surface its performance. The memory in the turf’s pile ensures that the synthetic turf is lifted back to an upright position, even in the absence of sand and rubber crumb infill.
Kestrel are the first contractors to have laid 4G turf in the UK mainlaid and are set to install more 4G constructions in 2009.
Matt said “the reason we opted for the 4G turf was because it offered the versatility of a durable landscape grass which could also be used for small sided football and also looked very plush underfoot. The fact that the kids can’t play with any infil material during lessons is also a major advantage for the teachers.”
As well as a 4G football area, the construction included a 3m high fencing system, access pathways, general landscaping and a covered wooden seated area where up to 200 students can sit in the summer time and watch school performances.
