Type of installation: Design and build of cricket pitch
Location: Wokingham Cricket Club, Berkshire
Kestrel were appointed in 2010 to design and build a new ground for Wokingham Cricket Club in Berkshire.
This was a substantial project which was funded by Taylor Wimpeys who bought the clubs existing ground for development. The new venue really is a joy to behold for cricketers. It comprises of two very large outfields and squares with an enormous clubs house sitting either side of the outfields which has a wonderful viewing gallery onto the main field.
The scope of works in this instance comprised of stripping off thousands of cubes of topsoil, carrying out cut and fill methodology, before returning the existing topsoil on outfield and installing two new squares .
Drainage was installed but not too intensively, as very often fields can dry out too much in the summer, leading to maintenance headaches. To counter against drought and irrigation system was installed comprising of tanks pipes and self travellers.
“We were lucky – we were able to sit down with the club and Taylor Wimpey pre-contract and discuss a variety of specifications and options which they could choose according to how they wished the field to perform and also how it would tie in with their ongoing maintenance and budgets.
Kestrel are always mindful that designs should be sustainable and that designing back from the clients budgets and current maintenance regimes is important. It is pointless handing over a project to a client that they can’t afford to maintain”
